Staying Covid-19 Secure in 2021

Employee Health & Safety – The Role It Plays at Santia

We specialise in asbestos and construction design management services designed to help the businesses we work with comply with their legal duties – to help protect their employees, brand and reputation.

Our employees work in high-risk environments every day – on construction sites and inside asbestos enclosures. This is why we take the health and safety of all of our employees extremely seriously and are accredited for this.

Staff Training & Accreditation

We have a robust certification and authorisation system in place for all of our employees – this includes a Skills Matrix utilised by our Scheduling and Planning team to only allocate Consultants to a project which they are fully trained to deliver. Our employees regularly complete health and safety training courses which keep them up to date with all legislation and ensures they are aware of latest industry best practice.

Confined Space Training

The asbestos services we offer means that our employees often work in confined spaces as part of the delivery of our surveying and analytical work. Confined space working can be extremely dangerous, so it’s vital that anyone who works in these environments is aware of and follows the Confined Spaces Regulations 1997.

Confined spaces range in type and size – they’re not always underground or deep inside buildings. The confined spaces our teams often face include:

  • Lift shafts
  • Crawl spaces
  • Ducts
  • Underground tunnels
  • Risers
  • Loft spaces

To make sure all of our employees working in these areas are safe we ensure they have the best training – and for us, that means working with MRS Training & Rescue. Santia completes confined spaces training courses with the specialists at MRS Training & Rescue regularly to make sure they are up-to-date with all certifications required and are aware of how to keep themselves safe when they face different environments.

As part of the mobilisation of a new contract with a water and sewer utilities company, MRS Training & Rescue Dinas helped us make sure our team based in Wales had up to date confined spaces training which was required to work safely in the confined spaces associated with the estate.

Training a large number of employees can be time-consuming and a logistical challenge for a national company but the Dinas team were able to train our staff using their state-of-the-art mobile training unit. This meant they were able to travel to our sites and train our staff where they worked.

How do our Customers Benefit from this Training?

Some surveying companies do not enter or work in confined spaces, as they do not have the right training or certification.

Without gaining access to confined spaces, businesses would be left with ‘inaccessible areas’ listed in their survey reports – leaving spaces which need to be managed as asbestos-containing, even if they don’t actually contain asbestos at all.

Here at Santia, our employees are fully trained to work in confined spaces, so we can access, enter, sample and report on almost all areas – to assess whether asbestos is present. The passion we have for delivering the best service possible to our customers doesn’t go unnoticed –  Santia recently won the UKATA Excellence Award for customer service. UKATA is the leading authority for asbestos training provision in the UK.
